I like the quiet - the trusting, profound silence between friends or partners when nothing needs to be said, the sound of the world waking up or falling asleep, the katydids at Camp Kirchenwald that by their very volume and repetition become silent.
But silence is demonic when it allows hate to grow uncontested. As Simon and Garfunkel sings, "Silence like a cancer grows." And while it is painful to me and to many that I still live in a country and world where it is necessary to say it - white supremacy is a demonic, sinful force in our communities and our world. That should be intuitively obvious to the most casual of observers. The fact that it is not means that we must be more faithful in saying it clearly again and again. Silence about this is demonic, and we must speak so that the silence can no longer hide this demonic force in our world.
