"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." - Philippians 4.6
Sometimes, Paul makes me mad - normally for his misogyny. But in this verse, I am mad because I am jealous of his faith. Paul, sitting in prison, tells me not to worry about anything. Sometimes, though, worrying is the only thing I can do. It at least gives me the illusion of doing something.
But Paul is very clear - don't worry, ever. When we worry, we takes our eyes off of Jesus. We take our eyes off of the present moment, where and when God is enough, to the future where we can imagine that God won't be enough.
Instead, Paul says to pray WITH THANKSGIVING. And on that count, he is light years ahead of his time (or we are behind!). Because we now know that cultivating gratitude is in fact the great antidote to worry. Being grateful for just three things every day, taking the time to write them down or at least bring them to consciousness actually rewires our brains to worry less.
So this week, be thankful for three things every day, or even better, write three of them in the comments below!
