Left out of the Lectionary.

February 21, 2018

Normally, when preachers have to deal with the wild beasts of Mark's wilderness temptation, they go to Hosea, Isaiah, and Ezekiel.  But the daily lectionary that accompanies the Revised Common Lectionary had these beautiful words from Job 5.22-23 for the Tuesday after Lent 1B:

[you] shall not fear the wild animals of the earth.
For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
and the wild animals shall be at peace with you.

Jesus in the wilderness, "with the wild beasts," is at peace with that situation.  Out there with the wildlife, his own wild heart, humanity's wild heart is restored.  Creation is renewed. May we all have such peace.
