Left out of the Lectionary - A Family Letter.

April 12, 2018

1 John 2 never gets read in worship in churches that follow the Revised Common Lectionary, which means that we miss this beautiful hymn/poem/canticle:

I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.
I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young people,
because you have conquered the evil one.
I write to you, children,
   because you know the Father.

I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young people,
   because you are strong
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

                                - 1 John 1.12-14

It's just a lovely text, perhaps from an early worship hymn or perhaps a poem from the hand of the author.  I have never heard it set to music, although it seems begging to be sung anew, as John writes to the church anew across the ages and finds us still beloved littel children.
