Between the Third and Fourth Week of Easter, our lectionary skips over 1 John 3.8-15, which includes:
“Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil…We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.”
The missing verses make is much clearer that when John speaks of us earlier in the chapter as God’s children, he means to imply that we are adopted as God’s children. We had been children of the devil, but we find ourselves adopted out of a terrible and broken family and placed miraculously in God’s family. Thanks for to God for our heavenly adoption!
