Mark 3.11 and surrounding verses get left out of our lectionary, so we never get to hear about the power of Jesus over unclean spirits.
Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.
The unclean spirits fall down before Jesus, acknowledging his lordship, and pointing us toward Philippians 2:
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Even the demons recognize who Jesus is in Mark's Gospel. The irony of course is that NO ONE else does. In Mark's gospel, only the narrator (1.1), the unclean spirits (3.11), and the soldier who witnesses Jesus' death (15.39) know who he is!
Does Mark's reader know?
